Space Scooters Reviews of the New Craze

What is a space scooter?

Space scooters are a different type of scooter. They work by pushing the board using alternate feet in a seesaw motion. You don't need to press too hard, not too much force is required which makes it easy for kids aged 8 plus to use (younger kids do use these as well).  Some designs can also be used like a traditional kick scooter as well.

The top space scooters for both kids and adults are the X580, X590 and for younger kids the X360 check our reviews of how they work and the pros and cons.

Space Scooter X580 Review

The X580 space scooter is designed for kids aged 8 and above. It has a maximum weight capacity of 90kg so if you're under this weight, why not have a go too!

Like all space scooters, it works by using the unique pump and go system. Place your feet on opposite ends of the deck (one at the front and one at the back). Then push down with alternate feet like a see saw to move the scooter forward.

The scooter folds down easily for transportation and storage. Easy to put in the boot of a car when needed. Great for trips for the park. The handlebars can be folded down too.

The 200mm (8 inch) PU wheels can really pick up some speed, which means awesome fun!  A helmet is recommended when riding one. The more kids pump on the board, the faster this scooter will go. Once they've reached their required speed, just maintain the see saw pumping action with feet to keep maintain the momentum. No electric or batteries are required. Leg action propels the scooter - a great workout for kids. The scooter works particularly well on flat ground and downhill. It also works uphill but will take a bit of effort!

The powerful brake on the handlebar makes it easy to slow the scooter down and come to a stop. Feet are not required for braking so no scuffed shoes! Kids are in complete control of acceleration and speed.

A real plus point of the X580 is that it features air suspension to absorb the bumps in the road which gives a smooth, comfortable ride. The unique drive train on the scooter provides a silent ride too.

There are 3 different height settings on the handlebar, so kids can set the the height to suit them.

Surprisingly, the setup is easy and quick.  You can even watch videos on youtube showing how to set it up the X580.

Another awesome feature is that the space scooter can be ridden as a kick scooter.  Pull on the folding trigger and press the platform down into its folding position to do this. It is heavier than a kick scooter, not too bad, but it weighs just over 8kg.

When you've finished riding, just use the kickstand to keep it upright. Some minor maintenance is required to ensure optimum performance such as keeping it lubricated and clean .

Verdict - Space scooters are a really fun ride which will get kids away from their screens and outside playing. They are unique so other kids, siblings and adults are bound to want a go. Kids will love space scooters and the X580 is a great option for the 8 plus age group.

Space Scooter X590 Review

The X590 space scooter is the updated version of the X580 with some new and improved features. It does cost a little more, but the extra few pounds may be worth it. This review will help you decide if that's the case.

Perhaps one of the big differences is the increased weight capacity on the X90 which is 115kg. It's still designed for kids aged 8 and above but the extra weight capacity will allow most adults to jump on and have a go as well.

Other improved features include an updated and improved drive-system which means you can go even quicker on the X90. Because of the extra speed there is also a strengthened brake. And premium rubber "lock-on" as handles give even more "grip" during the ride.

It still shares many of the pros with the X580. It's foldable, has a height adjustable handlebar (86-111cm) and features 200mm PU wheels.

Space Scooter X360

The junior space scooter X360 works in the same way that the bigger version does. Alternate feet push against each side of the board to proper the scooter. However, it is smaller and is designed for kids age 4 plus. It's easier for smaller kids to learn to ride this one when they start out.

Smaller design
It features 2 x 6 inch PU wheels. It’s lighter than the X560 scooter at 6kg. The maximum rider weight is 60kg. The deck is also smaller than the X560

Age Recommendation
The age recommendation for this scooter is between 4 and 7 years old.

Rockboard RBX Scooter

The Rockboard RBX is another brand of space scooter rated for kids aged 8 plus. It works in the same way as a space scooter (you rock the board with your feet in a see saw motion) but is a different brand.Rockboard won the TOTY award in 2012 and runner up in 2011 for best outdoor activity.

What's really awesome about the RBX is that it can reach speeds of up to 18km/h (10mph) so you can really fly when you want to.

The weight limit is 100kg, so if you're under this, there's no good reason whey adults can't have a go too! Honestly, it's fun - try it out.

The telescopic handlebar can easily be adjusted for the right height and it can be adjusted to any height setting rather than just two or three notches.

It's slightly lighter than other models of space scooter at 7.2kg. However, it doesn't have a folding mechanism. This is absolutely fine if you want to use it around the neighbourhood but makes it a bit more difficult to transport in a car.

There's a handbrake for easy and safe stopping power. A bit of assembly is required but it only takes a few minutes with easy instructions.

Also don't forget a helmet!

How fast do space scooters go?

The scooter will go about as fast as a regular scooter. It goes quite fast downhill but is slower going uphill. Make sure kids where a helmet for extra safety when using the space scooter.

Can you use space scooters off road?

Space scooters are not designed to go off road. They work best on smooth surfaces such as paths or pavements. However they should be able to go over uneven parts in the pavement as well as over bumps and cracks with no problem.

Is a space scooter suitable for a 7 year old

The age recommendation on the X580 space scooter featured above is 8 years plus. However, there are reviews of  7 year olds using it and many 7 year olds will be absolutely fine on this scooter. Obviously each child is different so ultimately it’s an adult’s call.
There is also a junior space scooter X360 for younger children which is featured below. This is for ages 4 to 7.

How did the space scooter get it’s name?

Apparently using one feels like you are walking in space!
